How can I get more traffic? This is a question I hear a lot. Learning Search Engine Marketing takes lots of commitment and a lot of time researching what’s new since our industry moves very rapidly. For those who want a fast jump start in our industry but don’t know where to go, these tips should help you get started. You have created a brilliant website and now it's time to get some traffic. This guide can give you some help on how to succeed with website promotion.
1 · Title of the page
The title of any web page should be descriptive and explain the contents of the page well. Your title should give the surfer and a visiting search engine spider, the whole idea of the contents website.
2. Email Advertising
Email advertising is often considered by many people Spam, however it could be an effective tool to use and not make it considered as advertisement. The best way to use email is through newsletters, mailing groups(Yahoo groups being the most popular) and opt-in mailing lists.
3 · Domain and the URL
If you have - in between your keywords in your domain name it will act as a space in between words. So if a search engine user were to search for "free java guide" and I had a domain name of http://www.freejavaguide.com then I would have a better chance of getting a higher place in the results page than my competitors.
4 · Content
On your page you should always try to have a healthy amount of descriptive text to explain what the page is about, don't rely on the title of the page. You should aim to have your keyword in the text as much as you can, with it still being comfortable to read. This is known as keyword density.
5 · H1, Bold, Italics
You should have your main keywords once in an Hx tag, once in bold and then once in ITALICS, this should show the search engine crawler that these are important words/phrases for the page, so in turn the crawler will make the assumption that the keywords are important for a visitor.
6 · Anchor text
Anchor text is what we call text links. You should always try and have all text links as descriptive keywords. When a spider follows the link to your page it should have an understanding of the content. Anchor text is a great way of improving your rankings on competitive keywords.
7 · Fresh content
As far as Google goes, it loves fresh content. They have a fairly new spider that they call the freshbot, it crawls the web daily looking for new/updated pages and sites. It will then list the page at the top of their index for that sites keywords. Google are doing this to keep their index topped up with the freshest pages and sites, instead of old information. If you keep you're site updated daily you should be able to keep the site close to the top of the search results.
8 · Domain check
If you are going to buy and use a URL that may have already been used in the past, it is worth while checking the history of the URL. If for some reason the site was banned by a search engine for any number of possible reasons it can still carry that penalty for many years afterwards.
9 · Page submission
Before you submit your site to the engines make sure that your site is search engine optimized.. Submit the root page to all the big search engines on the Internet: Google, Yahoo, MSN. It will take them a while until they crawl your site fully but be patient. There are plenty of directories online, find one that fits the theme of your site and submit the root URL, again this may take a while but be patient. Do not keep resubmitting if you're not yet listed. You may be penalized for this and your site may take even longer to get listed if at all.
10 · Link Building
Exchange links with sites that are on the same topic as your own. Link popularity is considered an important factor by many search engines to achieve a high ranking ,so you would want your link on as many other sites as possible. Links from sites related to yours are also given more weight by the search engines so you should try to get your link on such sites.
If you want to find sites to exchange links with, check out who's linking to your competitors and try to exchange links with them. Keep in mind that a link exchange should be beneficial for both parts.
Here are a few ideas to build links without too much effort
